World Courier's new Prague facility: Championing resilient and sustainable operations

By World Courier

At World Courier, we continue to make significant strides towards our environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals. Our latest achievement is a powerful testament of this commitment — a newly constructed facility in Prague, Czech Republic. Far from being just another addition to our global network, this building stands out as the greenest building in our portfolio.

The pride we take in this accomplishment is twofold. Not only have we been able to create infrastructure that meets our operational needs efficiently and robustly, but we've done it while adhering strictly to sustainable construction and management practices. This dedication has earned us BREEAM certification at an ‘excellent’ level for both ‘new-construction’ and ‘in-use’ stages — an internationally recognized benchmark for best practice in sustainable building design.

New-construction

To achieve the excellent rating for ‘new-construction’ the developer worked hard to meet and exceed standards across three categories:

  • Asset performance: This evaluates the energy efficiency and environmental impact of the building.
  • Building management: This measures how effectively the building is managed, with regards to maintenance, health, and safety.
  • Occupier management: This assesses how well the building interacts with its occupants in terms of comfort, well-being, and communication.

In-use

To achieve the excellent rating for ‘in-use’ the developer ensured high standards across a range of categories, including:

  • Management: This involved ensuring sustainable practices were integrated into project management.
  • Health and well-being: Relating to the design elements that enhance the comfort and well-being of the World Courier team that work there.
  • Energy: This focuses on energy efficiency, including the use of renewable energy sources.
  • Transport: Including access to public transportation, provision for cyclists, and impact on local traffic.
  • Water: Efficiency measures and the use of rainwater or greywater systems.
  • Materials: An evaluation of the choice of materials based on environmental impact over their entire lifecycle.
  • Waste: This assesses strategies for waste reduction during construction and operation.
  • Land use and ecology: Consideration of how a project affects local biodiversity and land usage.
  • Pollution: Minimization of pollution during construction and operation.
  • Innovation: This rewards projects for implementing innovative sustainability practices.

"I am immensely proud of our team’s achievement in constructing the greenest building in our entire network, located in Prague. This accomplishment is a powerful testament to our collective commitment and tireless efforts. More than just a building, this facility represents another crucial step towards a more sustainable future, that we at World Courier are actively working towards every day."

Nick Porter, President, World Courier

Our sustainability efforts extend far beyond this single facility, we are in the process of also installing solar panels at our Zurich and Copenhagen sites, boosting energy efficiency while reducing the carbon footprint. We have also invested in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with Swiss WorldCargo. With each step on our sustainability journey, we are setting new benchmarks for sustainable and resilient operations.
