From independent contractor to essential team member: the journey of Sanwonte Kearney

Sanwonte’s career in logistics began in North Carolina, where he worked independently, transporting pharmaceuticals in his cargo van. He recalls, “It was 2006, 2007. I had a cargo van and I used to transport medicine from Garner, NC down to like Oxford, NC.” This experience laid the foundation for his careful approach to handling pharmaceutical shipments.

Before joining World Courier, Sanwonte managed warehouses for major companies. It was during his time at one of these companies that he frequently encountered World Courier drivers at airports, sparking his interest in the company. His admiration for World Courier grew as he observed their operations. “World Courier had everything you need from top to bottom to apply to customers,” he noted, impressed by the company’s comprehensive facilities and equipment.

Sanwonte’s transition to World Courier was facilitated by a chance conversation with a long-time World Courier driver named Ramon Lewis. Ramon had been observing Sanwonte’s dedication and professionalism for months and encouraged him to apply for a position. Following a period of consideration, Sanwonte joined World Courier in August 2022, seeking stability and a place to build his career.

In his role, Sanwonte’s day typically starts early. Alongside Ramon, he arrives at the airport early each day to “sweep” the area, ensuring that all shipments are accounted for and replenished if needed. This attention to detail extends to every shipment he handles. “When I pick something up, I double-check everything — paperwork, packing lists, invoices, dry ice expirations,” he explains. His commitment to ensuring that every package is in perfect condition before delivery is unwavering.

Sanwonte approaches his responsibilities with a profound sense of duty. “The stuff that we are transporting on a daily basis is to save somebody’s life,” he emphasizes. This mindset drives him to treat every shipment as if it were destined for someone he loves. “What if it was somebody in my family that needed that? Every shipment I do, I make it seem like this is my family I’m delivering it to.”

One of the most challenging tasks Sanwonte faced was a recent qualification shipment involving a critical treatment for a rare pediatric condition. The journey was fraught with obstacles, from weather delays to a global IT outage that grounded flights. Despite the challenges, Sanwonte remained resolute. “I knew it would be a challenge because I had to walk around with the box everywhere I went. It had to stay flat, couldn’t be opened. But I approached it with the same diligence as I would for a loved one.”

Sanwonte’s proactive problem-solving skills were put to the test when his flight plans were disrupted. He quickly adapted, securing his own flights and ensuring that the delicate package remained compliant with transportation requirements. His efforts culminated in the successful delivery of the shipment, much to the relief of his team and the client.

Reflecting on the experience, Sanwonte acknowledges the importance of communication and teamwork. “Communication goes a long way. Don’t leave your coworker in the blind,” he advises, highlighting the need for collaboration in ensuring successful outcomes.
