Real-time temperature monitoring

Enhance cold chain visibility and ensure the integrity of your shipments with our real-time temperature monitoring system.
Real time temperature monitoring
World Courier's real-time temperature monitoring (RTTM) empowers pharmaceutical and biotech organizations with continuous temperature visibility into shipment conditions while products are in transit. By combining temperature and location data in a single monitoring model, RTTM helps protect product integrity, supports faster release decisions, and reduces reliance on single-use monitoring devices. Temperature information is at your fingertips, all accessible through the Customer Portal.

What is real-time temperature monitoring?

Real-time temperature monitoring is the continuous, active tracking of temperature conditions inside a shipment while it is still in transit. Rather than waiting until after delivery to review temperature history, real-time monitoring makes that data available while products are still moving through the network.

The RTTM solution is an optional shipment temperature monitoring service for eligible controlled ambient and refrigerated multi-use packaging shipments. It works alongside our real-time location monitoring service, combining payload temperature data with location visibility through our centralized monitoring platform. Location and temperature information is accessible via the Customer Portal. Together, they empower customers with greater cold chain visibility, granting a more complete picture of shipment conditions throughout the journey.

How does World Courier's real-time temperature monitoring work?

We use reusable real-time temperature monitors

Detection

We use reusable real-time temperature monitors
We use reusable real-time temperature monitors — specifically Controlant Saga devices — integrated with eligible multi-use packaging shipments. These replace traditional disposable real time temperature sensors, continuously measuring payload temperature throughout transit.

Data transmission

Processing and analysis

Data is stored and evaluated automatically
Once received, data is stored and evaluated automatically. The Digital Control Tower applies a standardized set of shipment temperature monitoring rules, continuously comparing current temperature readings against predefined thresholds. This process is fully automated, removing the need for manual review during transit.

Alerts and reporting

Alerts and reporting

Alerts and reporting
The real time temperature monitoring system alerts our Operations and Customer Service teams when a shipment’s conditions deviate from predefined thresholds. When and where possible, these teams assess the situation and take action to get things back on track. This provides round-the-clock centralized shipment temperature monitoring oversight without relying on manual intervention.

Compliance and logs
When no temperature excursion occurs, automated GxP-compliant reports are generated upon proof of delivery and sent directly to the shipper, consignee, and any designated third parties. This eliminates the need for slow manual data downloads and validation, ensuring accurate and audit-ready records are available immediately after delivery.

What are the benefits of real-time temperature monitoring?

For biotechs, pharmaceutical organizations, and patients, the ability to monitor shipments in transit and access GxP-compliant temperature reports immediately represents a meaningful operational step forward for both. Key benefits include:

Prevention of product loss

When temperature conditions begin to trend towards a potential deviation, the Digital Control Tower can alert operational teams while the shipment is still in transit. Where circumstances allow, local teams may be able to intervene — for example, by replenishing phase-change materials (PCMs). Early visibility significantly increases the likelihood of preventing an excursion before it escalates.

Supply chain visibility

Access to real-time shipment temperature monitoring data during transit helps identify where temperature risks are more likely to occur. As international logistics grows increasingly complex, this supports more informed logistics decisions and greater confidence in supply chain performance globally.

Regulatory compliance

Continuous, automated temperature recording supports adherence to strict local guidelines (such as those of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration or the European Medical Agency) and other regulatory standards. Our automated GxP-compliant reporting simplifies regulatory processes, delivers immediate post-delivery documentation, and reduces the manual workload for quality and logistics teams.

Faster product release decisions

When no temperature excursion has occurred, a GxP-compliant report is generated automatically upon proof of delivery and sent directly to the shipper, consignee, and any designated third parties. Because the temperature history is already recorded and verified, quality teams can review and confirm product integrity without waiting for manual data downloads. For time-sensitive medicines — particularly direct-to-patient or radiopharma shipments — even small reductions in release delays can be meaningful.

Supporting waste reduction

RTTM uses reusable real time temperature sensor monitoring devices rather than single-use monitors. Devices are designed to be recovered and redeployed through World Courier's logistics processes, which can help reduce reliance on single-use monitors and may reduce electronic waste where recovery and reuse are successfully achieved.

Better outcomes for patients

When logistics teams can verify product integrity faster and intervene earlier where issues arise, therapies are more likely to reach patients on time and intact. For advanced therapies — including some that are manufactured specifically for an individual patient — this visibility can be especially critical to supporting treatment timelines.

We develop shipment temperature monitoring systems tailored to the specific needs of pharmaceutical, biotech, and other specialist organizations. Whether you are managing clinical trial shipments or commercial distribution, our approach is designed to fit your operational requirements.
The Digital Control Tower and Customer Portal bring together temperature and location data in one connected environment

A fully integrated real-time temperature monitoring system

Our real-time temperature monitoring system is not a standalone tool — it is integrated directly into our established logistics network, business processes, and digital platforms. The Digital Control Tower and Customer Portal bring together temperature and location data in one connected environment, giving teams a complete and consistent view of shipment conditions. Explore our temperature-controlled solutions to understand how this fits into our broader cold chain capabilities.

Experts in real-time location monitoring

World Courier has provided real-time location monitoring as a standard feature for controlled ambient, refrigerated, and frozen shipments since 2023. Real time temperature monitoring builds directly on that foundation, extending visibility from location to payload temperature and giving customers an even more complete picture of their shipments in transit.

Committed to waste-reduction practices

Real time temperature monitoring uses reusable Controlant Saga monitoring devices rather than single-use monitors. With a five-year battery lifespan and approximately one hundred charge cycles, these devices are designed to be recovered and redeployed through World Courier's logistics processes. This reduces electronic waste and supports a more forward-looking approach to shipment temperature monitoring.

An extensive global network

World Courier operates across 50+ countries, with 4,000+ team members, 120+ company-owned facilities, 22 global depots, and 17 cryogenic charging centers. This global presence of locations means your real-time temperature monitoring needs are supported by local operational expertise, wherever your shipments travel.

Real time temperature monitoring FAQs

World Courier uses reusable devices integrated with eligible multi-use packaging shipments. These devices transmit payload temperature data in real time to the Digital Control Tower, where it is automatically monitored against predefined thresholds. Customers can access this data through the Customer Portal, giving them visibility into shipment conditions throughout transit — not just at the point of delivery.
Real-time temperature monitoring is relevant across a broad range of pharmaceutical and biotech applications. It is particularly valuable in cold chain logistics for personalized therapies, direct-to-patient (DtP) shipments, and commercial pharmaceutical distribution. In these cases, temperature integrity is critical and delays in compliance documentation can have meaningful operational consequences.
