Making Priya’s treatment a priority

Defying global medicine shortages to ensure timely delivery of vital therapy

World Courier recently undertook a critical mission to deliver life-saving medication to Priya, a young girl suffering from spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), demonstrating the impact of timely intervention in healthcare logistics.

The situation

Young Priya was diagnosed with SMA, a severe genetic disorder characterized by the loss of motor neurons, leading to muscle wasting and paralysis. This condition required immediate intervention, and her family reached out for assistance in securing a specialized medication. Originally, this medication was to be shipped from the UK to India, but a shortage necessitated sourcing it from the U.S. instead. This unexpected change presented significant logistical challenges, including the need for rapid adaptation of import and export documentation to meet critical deadlines.

The medication for Priya was part of a compassionate use program, which facilitated early access to potentially life-saving treatments for patients in urgent need. As Priya's condition worsened, the urgency of the situation became increasingly apparent, with her supply of medication running critically low.

Medicine shortages are a worldwide concern, with low- and middle-income countries bearing the brunt of the impact. Since September 2021, the reported number of molecules in shortage across multiple countries has surged by 101%.

The solution

The organization running the early access program had prepared the shipment; however, crucial documentation necessary for customs clearance was missing, posing a significant risk to the timely delivery of the medication. Acutely aware of the urgency, particularly as we have delivered medications to SMA suffers before, we intervened to expedite the process and ensure that the customs documentation was in order.

The team in Mumbai took decisive action by directly reaching out to the associate director of the early access program. They effectively communicated the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the need for immediate resolution. This direct engagement ensured that the outstanding documentation issues were promptly addressed, facilitating the smooth progression of the shipment. With documentation in order, the shipment was able to breeze through customs both at origin and destination.
