Sustainable lab efficiency
Cutting lab packaging waste without changing how labs work
The challenge
The laboratory's existing dry ice shipments consistently met temperature requirements, but they relied on single-use expanded polystyrene (EPS) packaging. While effective for protecting temperature-sensitive materials, the packaging created a steady flow of waste that needed to be stored, managed, and disposed of after delivery.
The organization wanted a more sustainable alternative that could help reduce packaging waste without affecting established workflows or requiring significant operational changes. At the time, reusable non-EPS dry ice packaging solutions were not widely available in the Australian market, limiting the options available to organizations looking to advance their sustainability goals.
The solution
As an existing logistics partner, World Courier worked with the laboratory to introduce GDI multi, a reusable dry ice packaging solution designed for routine deep-frozen shipments.
Unlike traditional single-use packaging, GDI multi can be returned and reused multiple times. This enabled the laboratory to move away from EPS packaging while maintaining the same reliable temperature-controlled transport process staff were already familiar with.
The transition was supported through World Courier's local logistics network. During routine deliveries, drivers collected empty packaging for return and reuse, eliminating the need for laboratory staff to manage large volumes of packaging waste on site. The approach helped simplify adoption by fitting into existing workflows with minimal disruption.

The outcome
The introduction of GDI multi significantly reduced the volume of single-use packaging entering the laboratory.
By replacing EPS boxes with a reusable solution, the organization reduced the amount of waste requiring disposal and freed valuable space previously occupied by used packaging awaiting collection or processing. Instead of managing growing volumes of discarded shipping materials, laboratory teams could focus on their day-to-day operations.
The reusable packaging model also helped support the organization's broader sustainability objectives while providing a practical alternative that could be integrated into existing shipping processes.
In addition, the laboratory was able to offer customers a shipping solution that aligned with increasing environmental expectations, helping strengthen its position as a sustainability-focused organization.
Key benefits
- Reduced single-use EPS packaging waste
- Freed valuable laboratory space previously used for waste storage
- Maintained existing operational workflows
- Simplified packaging management through collection and return services
- Supported organizational waste-reduction goals through a reusable packaging model.
Looking ahead
As packaging requirements continue to evolve, laboratory organizations are increasingly looking for solutions that balance operational performance with reduced waste burden.
World Courier's GDI multi solution shows how customers can move away from traditional single-use packaging while maintaining the reliability needed for temperature-sensitive shipments.
