Preparing for the unforeseeable
When the Eyjafjallajökull volcano erupted in Iceland in 2010, European air traffic was halted for over a week. Simultaneously, a patient in Perth, Australia urgently needed a bone marrow transplant from a donor in Bristol, United Kingdom. With flights grounded, we relied on World Courier Ground Europe to drive the cells nearly 2400 kilometers from Bristol to Lisbon, Portugal, where they were placed on one of the only available flights out. After a brief layover in Johannesburg, South Africa, the cells arrived just in time for the operation in Australia.
