WORLD COURIER FUNDS REBUILDING PROJECT IN TSUNAMI-TORN
THAILAND
KOH
LON ISLAND, Thailand, August 13, 2005—World Courier Group is
pleased to announce the successful completion of a reconstruction project on
Koh Lon Island, Thailand which resulted in the restoration of a local school
and the rebuilding of village housing washed away by last December’s deadly
tsunami. The project, funded in its entirety by World Courier, culminated with
a hand-over ceremony today, attended by Damrong Boonchot, Director of the Phuket
Educational Service Area Office (Department of Education); Henning Voss,
Managing Director of World Courier Thailand; and local village officials and
residents.
“This project was initiated at the special request
of the Governor of Phuket to help the village after expected government funding
failed to materialize,” says Wayne Heyland, President and CEO of World Courier
Group. “While we knew we wanted to participate in the tsunami relief effort, we
decided to delay our commitment until we could identify a specific project that
could truly tie us to a local community. When we learned of the plight of these
villagers, we felt it would be a perfect match for what we had hoped to
achieve. We have anxiously followed the progress of the local contractors over
the past few months and are delighted that we were able to make this project
possible.”
Of the 60 families living in this small island
community located just two kilometers south of Phuket, several had already been
displaced to the mainland due to lack of housing. Others had planned to leave
after learning that prospects for rebuilding the school were dim. “With the
opening of the new school at the beginning of August and the contribution of
much-needed housing, we have helped to rebuild this community,” says Mr. Voss
of World Courier Thailand. “The first families have now returned to the island
and others have decided not to leave. I am very proud of our efforts in
achieving something for the people of Koh Lon and have been sincerely touched
by their gratitude.”
