World Courier Makes Major Donation to Médecins Sans Frontières in Wake of Asian Disasters

STAMFORD, Connecticut, June 19, 2008—World Courier has made a generous corporate donation to Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders) to aid in international relief efforts currently under way in Myanmar (formerly Burma) and China following the devastating natural disasters that occurred in May 2008.

On May 2, Cyclone Nargis made landfall in Myanmar ’s Irrawaddy Delta off the Bay of Bengal , causing catastrophic destruction that resulted in an estimated 90,000 deaths. Another 56,000 people remain missing and as many as two to three million are homeless in the worst natural disaster in Myanmar ’s history.

Just ten days later, central China was rocked by the massive 8.0 magnitude Sichuan Earthquake which claimed over 70,000 lives, injured almost 375,000 and has left up to 11 million people homeless. Over 17,000 people still remain unaccounted for.

“These were two horrific events for this region,” says Wayne Heyland, President of World Courier Group. “Given our strong corporate presence in Asia Pacific, we wanted to support the local relief efforts in any way we could.”

Adds Korhan Yalcinyuva, World Courier’s Regional Director for Asia Pacific: “Médecins Sans Frontières does wonderful work and has proven time and again that it has the resources and logistical organization to deliver large scale assistance quickly and efficiently. Despite the daunting task, we are confident that our funds will be well spent reaching the affected populations in both countries.”

Founded in 1971, Médecins Sans Frontières provides essential medical-humanitarian aid worldwide to communities in crisis without regard to race, religion, gender or political affiliation. Through this independently operated organization, more than 3,000 volunteer doctors, nurses and support staff in 60 countries provide disaster relief, assist the victims of conflict, run emergency feeding programs, and tackle neglected diseases such as malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. In 1999 Médecins Sans Frontières was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its impressive works.

Funds contributed through the World Courier initiative will be shared equally between relief efforts in Myanmar and China . To learn more about these efforts, please visit www.msf.org.
